I'm marking essays, so obviously I need to channel my rage by listening to Riot Grrrl: Bikini Kill, Babes in Toyland and Huggy Bear, leavened only by the occasional twee Heavenly track and some Talulah Gosh.

Hello. Babes in Toyland were grunge not riot grrrl. Sorry to be a sub-genre pedant but your assumption is largely gender based.
Point taken, though I'd add that the Babes' sound is closer to riot grrrl than grunge.
