The idea is that you have your solar panels in space, where they can collect more sunlight, all the time. Then you convert it into microwaves and beam it down to a collector. Wireless power transmission was invented by Tesla - a maverick genius if ever there was one - decades ago, and has been demonstrated on a small scale, though not yet from space.
OK, a few people are going to be a bit picky about flying through the beams, but it'll be fine - a new era of unlimited power, which I suggest we use to clean up the damage we've done. Add some cold fusion and the planet will be transformed. Ahem.
