Something positive about the media

I know that I go on about the poor state of the UK media, quite often. The state of the Guardian especially pains me because it's at the core of my identity - but it's preference for lifestyle'n'celebrity is deeply tawdry.

Today was different. The Guardian's front page was pretty much perfect in terms of quality news, quirks and scoops: a further and more important story on tax-evading Tory bankroller Micahel Ashcroft, a big picture of a cute British child kidnapped in Pakistan, a good story on the skewed evidence given to Parliament on the climate change e-mails, and a hilarious/depressing (depending on your view of the Vatican) story of priests and male prostitution. Oh, and news that Robert Mugabe is rooting for the Conservative Party in the upcoming election (both parties believe in buying votes, fostering tax evasion and concentrating power in the hands of the few).

Whether or not all these stories are your thing, it's a comprehensive and varied page: politics, human interest, science and religion.
