Kitsch Klassic

I've previously mentioned that wonderful book by Sylvia Gibson, Latawnya the Naughty Horse Learns to Say "No" to Drugs, the publication that is guaranteed to put your child off… horses for ever.

I can only find one copy for sale, at £95, but Laura has located a scanned copy of the whole thing. So if you like surreal, patronising and badly written propaganda featuring dubious 'ethnic' names and pictures of horses smoking and swigging from bottles, off you go. It was written in 1990! What the hell did Gibson think 90s kids were like?

Still, it beats My Friend Flicka.

That totally explains why horses look the way they do early in the morning.

Speaking of books featuring drug use, I have finished "American Wife." Meh. It doesn't explain why an intelligent woman, one with a social conscience, would hook up with a Bozo like GWB -- unless he was hung like Latawnya's father.

No, even that wouldn't explain it.

Well, it's kind of a fantasy - nobody really knows what Laura Bush is like. I thought that part of the attraction - as far as the novel goes - is the sex. There's certainly plenty of it. Then there's the very old story about women wanting to 'save' a wayward man.

I've always wondered about the bozo argument. Bush was brought up and educated in the highest preppy circles: the whole dumb Texan thing might have been an electoral ploy, or a defence mechanism when his intellect and business skills failed to live up to those of the rest of his family. I just can't tell. He sure is dumb though.
