You're not singing any more

Finally tonight, two great pieces in the Observer Sport Monthly: one on football chants, which can be utter genius, and another on Rwanda's nascent competitive cycling culture (I'm a sucker for road racing, despite the competitors being stuffed with more drugs than an American steak). The new team is more than just sport - it's a way to transform lives and Project Rwanda deserves your money. I'd also like to see their traditional wooden bike race.

Good article about the chanting that, thanks. Sadly, Pete Boyle is woeful on MUTV, but I'll forgive him.

Footballers make me sick. Football fans, en masse, remind me of Nuremberg in the late '30s. Football chants are usually hate crimes. For my general opinion of football see my comments on doc martens in an earlier post. If we got rid of the football industry we would free up millions of pounds that are now spent on overpaid adolescents, piss-weak beer, pointless policing, poionous hot dogs and tacky team strip. I saw a match once. Somebody won and somebody lost. Sometimes, apparently, neither win. Let's write a song about it.
Oh yes, and TV programmes would run on time too. I love playing football mind.
I also hate cars.

Oh yes - and football gives you cancer.

Unfortunatley, for Zoot Horn this article was published too early for the Liverpool vs. Newcastle game on Sunday during which the red fans gave Shearer some career advice in chant form: "You should have stayed on the telly".

I thought the joke was - what's the difference between Newcastle Utd and Alan Shearer - Shearer will be on Match of the Day next season.

I hope not though, he's the worst pundit in the world, I find it amazing how someone can play football for so many years yet know so little about the game.

That Park Ji-sung chant is amazing. Had me laughing out loud then feeling bad cause it's offensive in so many ways.

I do find it weird that Man U fans are choosing to abuse Liverpool fans with a chant that says their communities are so impoverished that they have to eat rats, yet there are plenty of poor areas of Manchester. I guess it shows how far the Man U fan base has moved from it's working class roots.

Mind you, I've never really understood this rivalry between fans, I just like to see a beautiful game where player seem to develop an instinctive sense of their team-mates position and complex movements materialise from the tactical positioning of the opposing sides. Or some piece of incredible skill, Dennis Bergkamp's goal against Newcastle springs to mind. Put “Bergkamp Goal Newcastle” into Youtube.

Noble thoughts Neal, but rivalry between fans is what it is mainly about as far as I can see. This is due to two things: testosterone and testosterone. Myself, I like women's sports. I used to love watching my girlfriend playing netball. Unfortunately they banned me from the grounds after the coach caught me trying to drink the team's bathwater. But that's another story.
