The resolution to read more and buy fewer books is under threat already. I've acquired 12 already, though none were full price. But wow, what great books:
Iona and Peter Opie's Children's Games in Street and Playground (now being updated). Along with their Dictionary of Nursery Rhymes, it's a must-have. Dominic Bryan's Orange Parades, an anthropological discussion of this frightening but fascinating phenomenon; The Footnote: A History by Anthony Grafton; Simon Dentith's Society and Cultural Forms in Nineteenth-century England (which should be good for some exciting MA teaching I'm planning); several more volumes of Steve Bell cartoons to complete the set; Jasper Fforde's The Last Dragonslayer and Erskine Caldwell's much-banned exposé of 1930s American rural life, God's Little Acre (later turned into a sex-and-socialism-shocker movie: Reds in the bed, if you will).
Back to marking…
