Joined-up government, no 985.

David Cameron: we're going to make this the 'greenest government ever'.
Caroline Spelman: we're going to be the 'greenest government ever'.

They've already axed the Sustainable Development Commission.
What's next?

Energy and climate change secretary, Chris Huhne, said: "Electric and low-carbon cars are fun to drive and essential to meet our climate targets. That's why we'll need a massive increase in the number of electric and clean green cars on our roads. Because this is new technology the government needs to step in to kick-start the market, which is why today's initiative is vital."

Oh yes: cut the grants for electric vehicles from £230m to £43m. That's an 80% cut. That'll really encourage people to buy electric.

Greenest. Government. Ever.

Vote early, vote often

…is an Irish proverb. I voted at 7 a.m. today, partly because I had to be out of the house to get to Walsall anyway, and partly because I wanted the Tories to be behind from the start. I voted before anyone else in my ward. Plenty of loons standing: BNP, Christian Voice, Libertas etc. etc. If only we'd had PR I could have given my vote to Labour and the Greens (not necessarily in this order), but under first past the post, Labour had to have my vote solely to keep the Tories and BNP out.

Chill out

Apparently there's a debate going on in green circles about whether we need to use fridges. That got me thinking - I probably don't. I don't drink milk or other drinks which need refrigerating (though I do like cold beer), I like my cheese warm enough to taste, eggs don't need chilling, and my vegetables are fine on a rack. I don't buy meat very often and eat it on the same day if I do.

That said, I'm a single gentleman who walks everywhere and has his veg delivered. Had I a family and the need to plan meals days in advance, a fridge or freezer may come in very handy indeed, and the energy I'd save from not owning a fridge is probably minimal compared to what I've saved through not driving etc etc. I think I'll celebrate by using some of my carbon credit to go whale-hunting by plane!
