A colleague just sent me a link to candidates for the worst album art of all time. They're pretty shocking, but one in particular caught my eye:
This is Kevin Rowland, to whom The Hegemon is awarding an honorary doctorate, not for this album, but for his wonderful music as Dexys Midnight Runners. I suppose we should respect his bravery. Not everyone can carry off a pearl necklace and mutton-chop sideburns.
Shamefully, I temporarily possessed this album. It was, I assume, his mid-life crisis work. I was sent a review copy for the student newspaper I edited. So bad was it, that I hurled the CD from a high window. Shame really: it only sold 400 copies and is something of a collector's item now!
To take the taste away, here's my very favourite Dexys song: 'Plan B' (dedicated to George Osborne). To me it's pop perfection: insanely catchy, yearning, melancholic, repays repeated listening, timeless.
