May is shaping up

… to be a great month for culture. ATP, the Star Trek movie, and Pride and Prejudice With Zombies, about which I blogged a couple of months ago, and which is now available from some behemoth online corporations. I also got Hunger and the new Doves album, Kingdom of Rust in the post today. I've always had a soft spot for them. They're like a happier version of Tindersticks (and the title reminds me of Joan Baez's heartbreaking 'Diamonds and Rust', about her split with Bob Dylan). The video is a live performance from 1975.

ATP this year is one heck of a lineup.
Throwing Muses, The Breeders, Bon Iver, Teenage Fanclub (Bandwagonesque should be immortalised or something), Gang Of Four - Andy Gill is one of my favourite guitarists -, Yann Tiersen, Deerhunter, The Soft Pack, The Bronx...

Sorry, I slightly obsess over music. I'm guessing you have tickets? Slightly jealous.

I certainly am! Yes to the first five bands, and also to Wire and Shellac. Not arsed about Yann Tiersen because I like a lot of the contemporary classical composers he's 'influenced' by.

Wire are the one where the singer has a really bad voice, it annoys me too much to see the 'post-punkness' of it and Shellac are the Steve Albini band who I always confuse with Sebadoh.

Time to spotify Shellac!

Well, close enough - though 'post-punk' is a bit harsh for a band formed in 1976! Shellac are very angry men indeed.

Shellac at Phoenix in 1994. Best gig I have ever been to (Phoenix the festival not the city)

It's nice to know all these bands are still going. Quite a large proportion of them must be in their fifties, and even sixties, by now. All tomorrow's parties is a bit like a Northern Soul weekend for thirty/forty somethings isn't it? Nothing wrong with that mind you.

I would hold back on calling Star Trek culture too until you have seen it. I imagine the original/remake quality will be along the same lines of Get Carter/King Kong/Alfie/The Italian Job/The Wicker Man/Shaft/etc etc

It's got Simon Pegg in it for a start.

Shellac were never any good on record mind you

The word verification 'word' then was "iming" is that miming to oneself do you think?

You may well be right about Star Trek but my natural optimism is intact. Are you bored, by any chance?
