As a new media lecturer, it's tempting just to say yes (the electronic equivalent of tugging on someone's sleeve repeatedly while shouting 'look at me') and not read on. But I do. And I'm informed that Twitter is the perfect medium for 'breaking news' and 'updates on service interruptions'.
Really? I head over to the IT services website on to find this:
- The IT Service Desk is closed between 3 p.m. and 4 p.m. today, 13th October.
Very current. Let's have a look at their Twitter feed. Is there any indication that the entire Hegemon University webpage network was down for the whole weekend?
No. No there isn't.

Oh this has got to stop now. You are really, really not seeing the point of twitter at all. It is just talking. That is all. I know you can take it apart via post-modernist theory but so what? You can take anything apart with post-modernist nonsense.
How on earth can you claim it is all pointless chatter when you put up posts that are just youtube clips and ponderings on whether you should watch Monteverdi or Star Trek? Like it or not, your blog is the closest I have ever seen a blog come to resembling a twitter feed.
In fact I would go further and say that by doing so you are claiming a superiority that is not earned. Why is it alright to blog "That's got to hurt" but not to tweet it? Where is the difference? What makes your "That's got to hurt" more valid?
Face facts, you tweet, you just, for some unknown reason, do it on blogger. You are essentially cycling down a motorway while moaning at people for beeping their car horns.
You don't like twitter, fine, but please, for the love of all that is good, shut up for five minutes about it.
I love Twitter. LOVE IT.
Yeah, that's right: http://i49.tinypic.com/4i0fn8.jpg
Having said that, some thinks really don't need to be on Twitter.
The Hegemon's IT Services is not one of them.
PS. "Sugargate" as I called it was amazingly brilliant.
