What is wrong with people?

The answer appears to be that we are selfish Tory Scum:

A majority of voters are convinced that the consequences of spending cuts will be unfair, according to a Guardian/ICM poll.

OK so far. But:

The Conservatives have turned a two-point deficit in the Guardian's last ICM poll into a three-point lead, 39% to 36%.

Shameful. We know we're hitting the poor hard, and we appear to like it!

A friend of mine was telling me that the people he works with have spent the last week singing the praises of the Conservative government for coming down hard on benefits claimants. These people are stupid enough to believe that it's people claiming benefits who have got this country into a financial mess, not the fat cat banks and the Old Boy network that the bank bosses belong to. People have very short memories (the banking debacle is only two years' ago) and are very easily manipulated to believe anything. The easiest lies to tell are the ones that people wish to believe. The banks and their unctuous employees got away with fisting this country because their positions held power and they had the right connections. The poor and vulnerable do not.
It is nothing new to have a government create a witch hunt against a section of society in order to appease the disgruntled masses.

I apologize for the use of the word 'fisting'. I had a Tourette's moment.
