Culture roundup

OK, you should all sign the UCU petition of no confidence in the government's so-called education policies and ask your MP to sign the Early Day Motion. Obviously my MP, Paul Uppal, won't be interested, but your's might not be a selfish, dishonest git.

What's in the post today. Enough of the music which makes Ben weep - a 10,000 Maniacs acoustic CD, 2 Cocteau Twins CDs (Lullabies to Violaine 1 and 2), a Galwad y Mynydd album (60s Welsh folk-psychedelia), and Andy Votel's compilation of Welsh Rare Beats 2.

As for books, John van Maanen's Tales of the Field: On Writing Ethnography, Robert Coover's Briar Rose & Spanking the Maid, and Owen Jones's combative Chavs: the Demonisation of the Working Class.

It's funny because it's true. I've always thought that the Johnny B. Goode scene was deeply racist, which is a shame because I really like the films. Same goes for Marty starting the Civil Rights movement.

That said, the films are a liberal attack on Reaganite values to some extent.
